Search for tram commuters following Fitzroy sexual assault

Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad are appealing for information following a sexual assault in Fitzroy yesterday morning, Victoria Police say.

A woman was on a tram on Collins Street in the Melbourne CBD between 5am and 5.25am when an unknown man allegedly started to touch and assault her.

She then got off the tram at the St Vincents Plaza tram stop on Victoria Parade where the man followed her before allegedly sexually assaulting her.

A 49-year-old Flemington man was arrested by police about 6pm last night in relation to the incident.

He has been charged with a number of offences including rape, sexual assault, attempted rape, assault and false imprisonment.

The man will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.

Police believe the victim tried to get help from a number of commuters while still on the tram and are appealing for anyone who saw them to come forward.

At the time she was wearing a yellow or gold coloured dress.

Anyone who witnessed the man and woman on the tram is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
