On August 14, 2021, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J.
Austin III held a phone call with Canadian Minister of National Defence Harjit S.
Sajjan to underscore the close, longstanding defense relationship between the United States and Canada.
During the call, Secretary Austin recognized Canada's robust contributions to Afghanistan and pledged close cooperation in the coming period.
Secretary Austin thanked Minister Sajjan for Canada's commitment to resettle 20,000 civilians from Afghanistan.
Secretary Austin and Minister Sajjan also approved two joint statements on strategic guidance consultation and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) modernization.
