Live performances by some of Cairns' most talented young musicians will headline Youth Week 2022 celebrations at Tanks Arts Centre on Collins Ave, Edge Hill, with a free gig and an afternoon of activities on Sunday 3 April.
Up-and-coming performers and bands, including R&B, indie-pop, Afro-beats, punk, rock and folk acts from Djarragun College, St Andrew's Catholic College, and Cairns, Smithfield and Trinity Bay State High Schools, will be featured on two stages from 2pm to 7pm at 'Local & Vocal', an event for people aged 12 to 25.
As well as the music festival vibes, Local & Vocal will feature games, giveaways, food and activities, including Dungeons and Dragons in Tank 3, K-Pop, weaving and Polynesian sweets necklace-making workshops, Headspace chill-out zone, mini-tarot card readings, food vans and pride festival face paint with SSAY-IT.
Division 3 Councillor Cathy Zeiger said Local & Vocal was one of many events supported by Council for young people from 1-11 April as part of Queensland Youth Week.
"The talent among our young people in Cairns is amazing and we're so pleased to give 10 local performers and bands a stage – an internationally-renowned stage at that – for Youth Week at Local & Vocal," Cr Zeiger said.
"As part of Local & Vocal, we're also putting on a wide range of activities at the festival that are as diverse as the young people of Cairns, from Dungeons and Dragons and Torres Strait palm frond weaving, to rainbow pride face paint and tarot card readings.
"There will also be food and coffee vans, and spaces under the fig trees for young people to chill out with their friends, and listen to acoustic sets."
Councillor Zeiger said that, in addition to Local & Vocal, Cairns Libraries is holding a series of Youth Week workshops, Cairns Minecraft is hosting events, and the Cairns Safer Streets team is running a full program of activities across the city.
Queensland Youth Week is an annual celebration of young people aged 12 to 25 years and the positive contributions they make to Queensland.

- Saving Evelyn (4-piece from Trinity Bay SHS)
- Superboy (Reggae, hip hop and Afro beats)
- Hylidae (rock-indie-pop from Cairns SHS)
- Elysium (punk band from Smithfield SHS)
