Senior supports readily available during pandemic

Maroondah Council is encouraging all community members to reach out if they need additional support, including our senior residents.

Council is more than happy to direct those in need towards practical or social assistance, which can help if you are feeling lonely or facing difficulties. Some options include the My Aged Care Commonwealth Home Support Service (CHSP), which, during the pandemic, can provide emergency services for up to eight weeks without an assessment.

Other options include the Older Persons COVID-19 Support Line, which can provide help, support and mental health resources. Additionally, My Aged Care can assist with grocery and medication supply, if clients require deliveries and are unable to navigate online services.

Meanwhile, the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) offers a wellbeing check to ensure the provision of emotional or social support, particularly for those who have experienced reduced or cancelled services due to the pandemic.

Maroondah Mayor, Councillor Kylie Spears, said whatever your requirement, the first step is to seek assistance.

"We are fortunate to live in a very caring and resourceful community, where we are linked in with many incredible support systems.

"The impacts of the pandemic have left no-one untouched. We've all sacrificed so much and that can come at a price. We're here to listen and to provide you with up-to-date information to ensure you receive the support you need.

Council agrees with many experts that self-care is of critical importance, which includes a balanced diet, spending time outdoors, and keeping in touch with friends and family. Our priority is to ensure all community members have the capacity to practise self-care.

We can link you with community organisations who provide invaluable support, including for food relief, mental health, family support, and even housing and homelessness.
