Washington State University Extension Forestry experts will help forest-owning families preserve their ties to the land at a succession planning workshop, Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, in Forks, Washington.
Held in cooperation with the University of Washington Olympic Natural Resources Center, the award-winning "Ties to the Land" workshop helps families learn how to successfully pass on their land. Succession planning is the human side of estate planning, and is a way for families to maintain their ties to the land across multiple generation.
Families don't always engage in the planning necessary to safeguard the future of their lands. Including younger generations in key discussions about the future of the family farm helps ensure the successful transfer of beliefs and values.
"Ties to the Land" includes a mix of presentations and practical exercises that help families address the key challenges of succession planning. Workshop participants learn about the legal and economic aspects of transferring a farm, forest or ranch from one generation to the next. They also receive a workbook and companion video collection, tools designed to help families to continue to improve and direct communication and planning at home.
The facilitated, interactive session includes video-based components that provide effective tools that forest owners can use to plan for the future. The workshop ends with a presentation and Q&A period with an estate planning attorney.
The workshop runs 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Olympic Natural Resources Center, 1455 S. Forks Avenue, Forks, WA. Registration is $50 per family or ownership, and includes one workbook, a USB video and reference collection, refreshments, and lunch for one person.
