Police have charged a 34-year-old Pacific Pines man following an incident on the Gold Coast yesterday evening that involved a number of alleged traffic incidents, two serious assaults and the unlawful use of a vehicle, Queensland Police say.
It will be alleged that around 5.40pm yesterday a black Holden Colorado utility being driven by the 34-year-old has collided with two vehicles stopped at a red traffic light on Guineas Creek Road, Elanora at the intersection with Coolgardie Street.
The male driver of the utility is then alleged to have exited his vehicle and assaulted the 80-year-old male driver of one of the impacted vehicles.
It is further alleged the man has then stolen the other involved vehicle, a green Toyota sedan and has been involved in a number of hit and run traffic crashes on the M1 in the Robina area before exiting the vehicle and attempting to escape on foot.
Police commenced a track and search for the man who was located on Stadium Avenue, Robina a short time later.
The man is alleged to have assaulted a police officer who attempted to arrest him. A second officer has then restrained the man.
The man was treated at the scene and transported to Gold Coast University Hospital where he remains in a stable condition receiving treatment to injuries believed to have been sustained in the traffic crash.
A 34-year-old Pacific Pines man has been charged with one count each of serious assault of a person over 60, serious assault of a police officer, dangerous operation of a vehicle and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court today.
The 80-year-old driver who was assaulted was transported to John Flynn Hospital suffering a broken nose and contusions to his right eye and the back of his head.
The Senior Police Constable who was assaulted did not required medical attention.
The Gold Coast Crime Investigation Branch continues to investigate the incident and further charges are expected to be laid.
