SES Director’s commitment to safety recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

State Emergency Service (SES) Director Brian Cox has been awarded the Emergency Services Medal for his exemplary resourcefulness, initiative and leadership as part of the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan congratulated Mr Cox on his achievement and his commitment to enhancing emergency management and disaster response in Queensland.

“With more than 37 years of emergency management experience, Brian’s influence and guidance in the disaster management sector has made him a very deserving recipient of this award,” Mr Ryan said.

“Brian has been instrumental in the development of State Disaster Guidelines in Queensland, enhancing operations between Local Government authorities across the state and championing national project initiatives.

“He is a passionate supporter of volunteerism and goes to extraordinary lengths to support his people.

“I know Brian’s passion and dedication will continue to benefit Queenslanders and I thank him for his service.”

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Greg Leach said Mr Cox was dedicated to continuous improvement and played a key role in developing Queensland’s whole-of-government volunteer support team concept for the State Disaster Coordination Centre (SDCC).

“Brian is a passionate supporter of volunteerism and his work to enhance how we engage and support our volunteers is second to none,” he said.

“As part of this work, Brian was instrumental in training staff from across Government and other organisations to assist the SDCC during disasters, enhancing capability and efficiency.

“I’m thankful for Brian’s contribution and look forward to his continued work supporting Queensland communities.”
