The City is asking for Gold Coasters to monitor conditions for flash flooding due to heavy rainfall forecast today. In the last 24 hours there has been up to 125mm of rainfall in some areas across the Gold Coast.
The highest falls were at Tallai (125mm), Burleigh Waters and Tallebudgera Creek (124mm).There has been around 30mm of rain in the southern catchments in the last hour.
Rainfall is expected to intensify at times during the day increasing the risk of localised flash flooding especially in urban and low-lying areas. Rapid runoff from dry ground is increasing the risk of flash flooding. There is potential for minor to moderate flooding of Gold Coast rivers and creeks and the Albert Logan River catchment, with a Flood Watch current.
Roadways could become flooded. Never drive, walk, ride through, play or swim in flood water. If it's flooded, forget it. Stay out of flood water.
We are already seeing people attempting to drive through floodwaters and getting stuck, putting their lives and others at risk. At this stage beaches will remain open with lifeguards monitoring the situation closely.
People are reminded to always swim between the red and yellow flags and listen to the advice of lifeguards. Sandbag stations are now closed. Over 1000 sandbags were distributed yesterday.
There are 11 roads currently closed but this could increase throughout the day. Stay up to date by subscribing to Gold Coast Alerts now at the City's Disaster and Emergency Dashboard. The Dashboard is the central point of information for severe weather updates, advice, alerts and road closures.
Residents can also download the Bureau of Meteorology app to receive warnings and alerts for their area.
In a life-threatening situation, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. For non-life-threatening flood and storm emergency assistance, contact SES on 132 500, 132500.qld.gov.au, or the SES Assistance QLD app.
