The Victorian Government is backing the Goulburn region to attract even more tourists and day-trippers, with $405,000 in funding to upgrade the historically significant Australian Light Horse Memorial Park in Seymour.
The Park, formerly known as Seymour Camp, has a long military history. From a light horse training ground pre-Federation to a base camp in the Second World War, thousands of Australian diggers have trained and rested on the Park's lands.
The project includes improving accessibility and public amenities, with upgrades to Waler Paddock Lake access and the public walking trail. The road access and car park will also be upgraded and extended so more people can visit.
The Park covers 150 hectares of beautiful countryside east of Seymour's town centre and is only a 90-minute drive from Melbourne, perfect for a family daytrip or picnic.
Expect to be dazzled by the panoramic views from atop Anzac Hill, then walk down and travel back in time to the days when the Park was an army base and explore the camp hospital, cook house, and old army administrative buildings. Visitors can learn about the Park's rich history through new interpretive and information signage.
The walking trail runs through groupings of native gums and along the edge of Waler Paddock Lake, allowing visitors to lose themselves in Victoria's beautiful bushland.
The project will provide significant flow-on economic benefits for local businesses from more tourists visiting, and through the construction works, which will generate up to three jobs. Works are expected to start in February 2023 and be finished in September 2023.
The Regional Tourism Investment Fund is helping entice more visitors to Victoria's regions, driving private investment and accelerating the recovery of the tourism sector.
