First Nations people currently own less than 0.2 percent of surface Australia's waterways.

Our work to elevate First Nations Peoples' voices in global water discussions is being showcased at World Water Week on 24-28 August 2025.

Representatives from our department and the Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Water interests are taking part in 2 panel discussions.

They will share how through incorporating First Nations leadership, knowledge and priorities we're:

  • reversing historical water dispossession among First Nations Peoples
  • shaping an equitable and Culturally grounded future for all water users in Australia.

Following are details of how and when you can watch these sessions.

General-panel discussion: Indigenous leadership & governance in water policy for climate action

This panel will highlight the vital role of Indigenous leadership and traditional knowledges in water management.

When: Monday 25 August 2025

Time: 5:00pm - 6:30pm AEST

High-level panel discussion: Indigenous Peoples at the heart of decision-making, lessons for water

Our department is co-hosting this first ever World Water Week Indigenous-focused high-level panel.

This panel will highlight the critical role Indigenous people play in speaking up for and protecting water in a changing climate.

Speakers will also highlight the benefits to all water users of including Indigenous voices in policy making.
