Know someone who goes above and beyond for our community? Want to give a shout-out to a worthy local organisation that deserves recognition? Edward River Council is calling on residents to put forward their local legends, with nominations now open for the 2026 Australia Day Awards.
These Awards celebrate the achievements and contributions of individuals and community organisations across our region. They're a chance to shine a light on the people who make Edward River a better place - often quietly, behind the scenes.
"Nominating someone for an Australia Day Award is a meaningful way to say thank you," said Mayor Cr Ashley Hall. "We want to recognise those who give their time, energy and heart to our community, and make sure they know how much we appreciate them."
Council will honour outstanding contributions across nine categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sports Award, Junior Sports Award, Arts & Culture Award, Junior Arts & Culture Award, Community Event of the Year, Community Group of the Year, and Environmental Citizen of the Year (the Bill & Elwyn Hermiston Memorial Award).
Edward River Council's Acting CEO Nathan Holahan said the Awards are a reflection of the region's strong community spirit. "Every year we're inspired by the stories of people who give so much to others; whether through sport, the arts, environmental work or community service. The Awards are a chance to celebrate that generosity and commitment, and to say thank you in a public and heartfelt way."
Nominations are open earlier this year, giving the community more time to put forward their local champions. Entries close Friday 22 November 2025.
Submit your nomination online via www.edwardriver.nsw.gov.au/Community or collect a hard copy from Council's Customer Service Centre or the Edward River Library.
Award recipients are selected by Council's Australia Day Awards Assessment Panel and will be announced at the Australia Day celebrations on 26 January 2026. Winners will receive a certificate and a special Australia Day gift, presented by the Mayor.
Let's celebrate the people and groups who make Edward River proud.
