Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley has issued a show cause notice to the Shire of Coolgardie, giving the council 21 days to demonstrate why it should not be suspended.

The show cause notice outlines the Western Australian Government's serious concerns regarding the Shire's financial management and governance that has led to its current financial position.

The show cause notice also outlines the government's concerns about the Shire of Coolgardie's governance decisions, long-term financial planning and ability to restore financial stability.

In accordance with the Local Government Act 1995, the Shire has 21 days to respond, after which time, Local Government Minister Beazley will consider what action to take.

This will include whether to suspend the council and recommend council members undertake budget and financial reporting training.

As stated by Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley:

"Issuing a show cause notice to the Shire of Coolgardie is the result of long-standing concerns about the council's management of the Shire's finances, including its significant debt, and doubts that the Shire will be able to return to a financially stable position.

"My decision is based on the council's role in the extremely serious nature of the financial issues faced by the Shire and comes after careful consideration of the information presented.

"The government is giving the Shire the opportunity to prove why it shouldn't be suspended.

"I will consider the Shire's response and all the information provided to me before making any decision.

"My main priority is to ensure that stable, effective governance is provided that delivers necessary services and financial security for the community."
