Shire-wide On-Leash Order Starts 1 July

From 1 July 2025, Mitchell Shire Council's new Dog Control Order No. 1 will introduce a Shire-wide requirement for dogs to be on-leash in public places unless they are in a designated off-leash area or fenced dog park.

The Order aims to improve community safety and protect local wildlife, livestock, and fellow residents by ensuring dogs are kept under control in shared spaces across the municipality.

Key points of the new Dog Control Order:

  • All dogs must be on-leash in public places unless in a sign-posted off-leash area or fenced dog park.
  • Dogs must remain on-leash within 10 metres of playgrounds and are prohibited from entering fenced playground areas.
  • Dogs must also be on-leash during events such as markets, sports games, or training sessions.
  • The Order does not apply to working dogs actively engaged in moving livestock.

Council has designated off-leash areas (including both open spaces and fenced dog parks) across the Shire, allowing dogs space to exercise freely under effective control.

Community consultation from 18 November to 18 December 2024 showed strong support, with over 700 responses indicating most residents want clearer on-leash rules to help everyone feel safe using our parks, trails, and public spaces. The new Dog Control Order was then formally endorsed by Council at its March 2025 meeting.

The new Order simplifies existing rules by replacing previous location-specific on-leash orders with a single, consistent regulation for the whole Shire.

Council thanks all community members who provided feedback and encourages everyone to continue enjoying our parks and public spaces safely and responsibly.
