City of Ryde Council has made the decision to discontinue the Shop Ryder bus service from 20 December 2025.
The service has become increasingly challenging to deliver due to increasing operating costs and legislative constraints and liabilities imposed by the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).
The service was introduced in 2008 as the Top Ryder, to support customer visits to the Top Ryde Shopping Centre and to provide a more sustainable transport option.
At its 22 July 2025 meeting where Council resolved to take this step, Council noted that Shop Ryder would almost entirely duplicate existing public transport service routes if further modifications were introduced to comply with HVNL.
Council also noted there is already a high degree of overlap with existing Transport for NSW public transport services, and that the provision of a public transport service such as this is not a core function of local government.
Alternative transport services
There are a range of public transport and alternative on-demand rideshare options the community can utilise, including:
- Stryder Community Transport – Stryder provides accessible transport to people living in the community who have specific transport needs related to their age, frailty, location, or disability, which could involve trips to medical appointments, everyday transport, social day trips and shopping services.
