Rockhampton Regional Council is calling on the community to support their annual Homeless Connect event to be held 19 May this year.

Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said this event has an impressive track record of helping vulnerable members of our community.

"Since the first Homeless Connect event in 2010, over 5800 people have accessed support through this event," Cr Wickerson said.

"When you consider that we had to cancel in 2020 due to Covid, this is a tremendous amount of assistance delivered to those in need.

"Last year we were also limited to offering vouchers for hampers via our affiliate agencies.

"That said, a total of 135 vouchers were issued – meaning 135 families, or around 540 people, still benefited in 2021!

"Whether it is picking up a hamper, to getting a haircut, a massage, or medical check-ups, the event will provide a range of services on the day.

"This event, as the names suggests, connects our community who are struggling, to a network of support agencies that can provide assistance.

"Being introduced to those agencies may simply provide the support needed on the day, or arrangements may be made for access to future assistance.

"Whether its help finding accommodation, pastoral care, to health and financial advice and much more, there is always a wealth of support and knowledge that people can tap into at this event.

"We are calling on the community to assist by providing donations which will be made up into hampers to give out on the day.

"Things like non-perishable food items, toiletries and female hygiene products are always very much appreciated."

Donations can be dropped at the School of Arts Building at 230 Bolsover Street between 9am-4pm Monday to Friday until the 6 May 2022.
