Six Charged, 15 Fines in Wollongong E-Bike Crackdown

Six people have been charged and 15 infringements issued following a two-day e-bike and e-scooter operation in the Illawarra.

Operation Iron Pedal is aimed at disrupting and reducing the illegal and dangerous use of non-compliant e-mobility platforms and associated anti-social behaviour across Wollongong Police District.

On Monday 22 December 2025 and Tuesday 23 December 2025 officers attached to Wollongong Police District patrolled on pedal-assisted electric bicycles with assistance from officers on foot and in vehicles in the Wollongong CBD and north of Wollongong to Coledale.

The results include;

6 charges laid including possession of prohibited drugs, goods in custody, and driving while disqualified.

15 infringements issued such as failure to wear helmets and riding on footpaths by persons over the age of 16.

Incidents of note;

About 2.35pm yesterday ( Tuesday 23 December 2025) officers were patrolling as part of the operation when they stopped a car heading northbound on Squires Way, North Wollongong. Police spoke to the 39-year-old male driver and had reason to search his vehicle. Officers seized two multitools containing a knife attachment, two sets of car keys not belonging to his car, items including handbags and purses which police will allege were stolen and house breaking implements. He was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station. He was charged with 8 offences including two counts of custody of knife in public place, drive motor vehicle while licence suspended, three counts of goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not m/v), possess housebreaking implements and commit s114 offence, having previous conviction. He was refused bail to appear in Bail Division Court 3 today.

About 1.40am today (Wednesday 24 December 2025), officers were patrolling as part of the operation and allegedly sighted an e-bike travelling at high speed. A 38-year-old female rider and her 37-year-old female passenger were stopped. Checks revealed the female rider's license had been suspended until 2042. She was issued with a future court attendance notice for disqualified driver.

About 12.45am yesterday ( Tuesday 23 December 2025), officers patrolling as part of the operation stopped a 44-year-old man riding his bike on Mangerton Rd, near Crown Street, Mangerton. He was issued with a traffic infringement notice for rider not wear approved bicycle helmet, riding on footpath, ride bicycle in darkness no light.
