Slim Dusty Centre: Macleay's Biggest Hidden Gem

Kempsey Shire Council

Think you know the Slim Dusty Centre? Think again. What many visitors don't realise is that this nationally significant museum is just the beginning.

The Slim Dusty Centre has quietly grown into one of the Macleay Valley's top cultural destinations, offering a visitor experience that celebrates art, history, creativity and community, all in one stop.

While the museum remains a moving tribute to the lives of Slim and Joy, complete with their wall of Golden Guitars, treasured family memorabilia and the legendary touring car 'Old Purple', there's much more to discover beyond the music.

Josie Anderson, Operations Supervisor at the Slim Dusty Centre, said the centre's location makes it an ideal stop for travellers.

"The centre is only one kilometre off the M1 and features plenty of attractions to reset the mind and rest before continuing on your way," Miss Anderson said.

The Nulla Nulla Regional Gallery, now entering its second year, has already hosted a dynamic program of exhibitions that bring high-quality art to the Macleay, displays that previously would never have reached the region.

"From local talent to larger-scale touring exhibitions, the gallery is fast becoming a hub that nurtures creative growth and interest for both residents and visitors," Miss Anderson said.

Entry to the gallery is free.

The experience continues through the centre's beautifully curated gift shop, where locally crafted pieces sit alongside iconic Australian brands, including the famed Akubra. With gift vouchers available for both retail purchases and museum entry, it's an ideal place to find a meaningful memento or thoughtful present during the festive season.

As the official Visitor Information Centre for the Macleay Valley Coast, the centre's knowledgeable team is ready to help travellers make the most of the region's natural beauty, from sweeping coastline to lush hinterland.

"Add in excellent coffee and fresh, flavourful food from Key Café, and the Slim Dusty Centre becomes a perfect 'stop, revive and thrive' destination for holidaymakers," Miss Anderson said.

The centre remains open throughout the festive season, closing only from 24 December to 1 January before resuming normal trading.
