Volunteering through our Companion Connections program has become a meaningful part of Michelle's week
The program is designed for volunteers to connect with Bayside residents who are looking to increase their social interaction.
Michelle has paired with Margaret and Graham, along with their neighbour Joan, who lives across the road. Together, they share cups of tea, swap stories and enjoy the simple joy of companionship.
Michelle has volunteered in the community for many years but says this experience has been particularly special.
"I've got a lot out of volunteering, especially spending time with beautiful older people who have lived full lives," she said. "I've learned so much from them. I share a lot too - Margaret's been on a journey with me."
For Graham and Margaret, Michelle's visits are more than just a friendly chat, they're a highlight of the week.
"It's brilliant when Michelle pops around," Graham said. "We don't get enough visitors, so it really lifts our spirits."
Joan agrees, "It's lovely to have someone so bright and cheery like Michelle," she said. "She's a real ray of sunshine."
Companion Connections is designed to be flexible, with volunteers and participants arranging visits weekly or fortnightly that best suits them.
For older residents, a friendly chat or a shared laugh in the comfort of their home can ease loneliness, support wellbeing and create meaningful connections. Volunteers often find the experience just as rewarding, discovering the joy of making a meaningful difference in someone's life simply by sharing their time, stories and presence.
If you enjoy connecting with people and want to give back to your local community, Companion Connections is now looking for volunteers.
