Over the last few years, we've installed smart parking technology in Sandringham and Brighton activity centres. The real-time, digital parking signage helps drivers find available parking more efficiently. This reduces vehicle emissions, increases vehicle turnover, and maximises the use of existing parking capacity. Council can also use parking usage and duration data to help inform decision-making about parking restrictions and enforcement.
As identified in the Bayside Parking Strategy, it's now time for Hampton Street shoppers to benefit from the technology upgrade.
From Monday 7 September, weather permitting, we're installing 537 in-ground vehicle detection electronic sensors sensors and 11 dynamic signs along Hampton Street, between Mills and Small Streets. The in-ground sensors will also communicate with the UbiPark app and website (currently in a trial phase), so motorists can monitor parking availability and plan ahead.
Works are scheduled between 6am - 5pm, Monday to Friday. We're staging the installation locations along Hampton Street to help minimise the disruption. During works, activity centre users will experience intermittent 1-directional road closures, temporary parking disruptions, some construction noise, and restricted footpath access. Traffic management will redirect pedestrians and traffic. All efforts are being made to reduce the impact to shoppers and traders.
We anticipate the dynamic signage to be operational by early November, weather permitting.
