Hurstville Museum & Gallery is excited to announce that the Snakes and mirrors exhibition by acclaimed artist Petrina Hicks will be on display from 17 January to 19 April 2026.
This touring showcase from the Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh) is free and open to all ages.
Petrina Hicks is famous for her bold, large photographs. They blend elements of mythology, fables, and art history. Her work explores the modern female experience through powerful images that often pair women with animals. These photographs are rich in symbolism, featuring snakes, eggs, and parrots, each representing ideas about identity and the mind.
Although the images appear calm and still, they feel alive and full of meaning. Animals are shown close to humans, creating a sense of intimacy and sparking curiosity. The exhibition invites visitors into a world of quiet wonder and endless possibilities.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "We are excited to bring this engaging exhibition to our community."
"Petrina Hicks's work challenges us to see beauty and meaning in unexpected places."
"Art like this encourages conversation and reflection. Come visit the Hurstville Museum & Gallery and see these amazing photographs for yourself!".
The exhibition is curated by Anouska Phizacklea, the Director of MAPh. It is supported by the City of Monash, Creative Victoria, and the MAPh Foundation.
The exhibition kicks off with a special Open Day on Saturday, 31 January 2026. This day will also officially launch the Hurstville Museum & Gallery's Permanent Exhibition, Georges River Reflections and local talent Bryan Mew's exhibition in the Dragon's Lair Gallery.
In line with Hicks' exhibition, visitors can meet fascinating Australian wildlife through live animal encounters with Raptor Reptiles. Animals will include the tawny frogmouth, reptiles, and amphibians. Two educators will share insights about animal habitats, conservation, and how we can help protect these species.
