Snapchat launching digital magazine about technology

- Snapchat's core focus is bringing together people in the smartphone world, doing so through its Discover section and hoards of geo-filters. Now, though, it will look to bring the online user something different - Real Life, Digital Spy said.

No, the company hasn't secretly been working on a spin-off universe - it's making its way into the field of publishing with an online tech magazine named Real Life, Digital Spy said.

Instead of focusing on iPhone rumours and product reviews, though, the magazine will feature "essays, arguments, and narratives about living with technology", according to a blog post from Nathan Jurgenson, a Snapchat employee and social media theorist who will act as Real Life's editor-in-chief.

The publication will also be housed online, not within the Snapchat app. Jurgenson says that Real Life will publish one piece of writing each weekday, and may eventually expand to other mediums and formats as well - a process which mimics what Snapchat brings through its Discover section.

Though the project is being funded by Snapchat, Jurgenson mentions in his post that the site will retain editorial independence.

The publication will launch on June 27.
