SOMAD AND UNDER THE GUMS >>>
ORIGINAL SONGWRITERS TAKE THE BIG STAGE AT GOIN' TO GIL
SOMAD (Songwriters & Original Musicians Association Dubbo) and Gilgandra's flagship Under the Gums Festival are teaming up for an epic collaboration at the 2025 Goin' to Gil Weekend, celebrating original songwriting and creating opportunities for regional artists to step into the spotlight. This collaboration shines a spotlight on regional voices—giving local and emerging artists the chance to perform on the same stage as major national acts, gain hands-on experience in stage management, and connect with new audiences. More than just music, it's about growing opportunities for creatives across regional NSW.
From 1:30pm on Saturday, 4 October 2025, the SOMAD x UTG Songwriter Series will transform Gilgandra into a hub of original music, inspiration and community connection.
Three acclaimed artists will headline the songwriter series:
Darren Smith – Hailing from Orange, Darren is a paramedic by day and a heartstring-pulling songwriter by night. Known for his emotive lyrics, distinct blend of '80s rock and modern country, and a growing national following, Darren brings a seasoned performance and deep lyrical resonance to the stage. With an impressive catalogue including 2023's Connection EP and his recent worldwide-streamed single One More Day (co-written with Clinton Hoy), Darren is preparing for a standout 2026 album release titled Shadows Fall.
Clinton Hoy – A Dubbo-based songwriter, teacher, and masterful storyteller, Clinton's music balances life's raw truths with melodic grace. With four albums, five EPs, and a reputation for authenticity, his latest release We Might Just Survive invites listeners into deeply personal territory. Clinton's presence in the original music scene continues to grow, marked by collaborations like his recent hit with Smith.
Belle – Representing the next generation of singer-songwriters, Belle from Dubbo is turning heads with her heartfelt songwriting and emotional authenticity. With a sound that channels the introspective lyricism of Lizzy McAlpine and the emotional rawness of Olivia Rodrigo, Belle is poised for big things and offers a fresh voice that connects across generations.
Clinton Hoy, President of SOMAD, says:
"SOMAD was created to give regional songwriters and performers a platform to share their work and connect with audiences. Partnering with Under the Gums really supports this. To have our artists not only perform, but do so on a professional festival stage alongside national acts, is an invaluable experience. It shows that original music from the regions has a powerful place in the wider industry."
As part of the Goin' to Gil Festival Weekend (3–6 October 2025), Under the Gums is the headline event—lighting up the Castlereagh River with an incredible night of live music, street food, brews, kids' activities, market stalls and fireworks. The 2025 lineup features major names including Daryl Braithwaite, Lane Pittman, Abbie Ferris, and family favourite Bluey, alongside a strong showcase of regional performers and original songwriting.
With subsidised ticket options available, and buses running from Dubbo, Coonamble, Coonabarabran and more, getting to Gilgandra for this unforgettable weekend has never been easier!
Gilgandra Shire Council's Under the Gums Project lead, Kathryn Larkin, says: "Partnering with SOMAD amplifies what Under the Gums is all about—community, creativity, and connection. By creating space for local stories and regional talent, we're not just putting on a show, we're building pathways and celebrating our regional talent with this songwriter series. We encourage you to head up for the start time, and soak in the uniqueness of these acts!"
SOMAD continues its mission of inspiring connection through original music and creative expression across rural and regional NSW, and this partnership with UTG is another powerful step in strengthening community, creativity, and culture.
Whether you're a seasoned music lover or discovering these voices for the first time, this is a weekend not to be missed.
