Southport: Charges Laid for Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Torture

Police have charged a third man as part of investigations into the alleged assault of two men at Southport in January; including the alleged kidnapping, deprivation of liberty and torture of one and alleged attempted kidnapping and armed robbery of the other.

It will be alleged that around 6.30pm on Wednesday January 18, a group of men attended the carpark of a Southport apartment complex in a Nissan Maxima bearing false registration plates and waited.

It will be further alleged that around 8.20pm, a 24-year-old South Australian man and a 22-year-old Southport man were walking towards the 24-year-old's parked 2020 Mercedes Benz C63 sedan when they were approached by members of the group wearing balaclavas.

The 24-year-old was allegedly assaulted by some of the group, while the 22-year-old was assaulted by another member armed with a baseball bat.

It will be alleged that the group attempted to force the 24-year-old into his Mercedes but failed, instead forcing him into the rear-seat of the Nissan, however he managed to escape the vehicle.

The group allegedly forced the 22-year-old into the rear-seat of the Mercedes and fled in both vehicles, stealing the Mercedes along with the 24-year-old's phone.

Police were then notified by witnesses.

The 24-year-old was located with facial injuries and was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

It will be alleged that the 22-year-old was driven a short distance to Brighton Parade where he was transferred from the stolen Mercedes to another vehicle, and the stolen Mercedes was abandoned.

The Nissan was driven nearby to Park Lane where the occupants exited the Nissan and got into a white vehicle, and the Nissan was abandoned.

The 22-year-old was then allegedly transported to a secondary address where he was tied to a chair, assaulted and threatened with a firearm.

It will be alleged that the 22-year-old was then dropped off at a Burbank location before the group fled.

The 22-year-old used a ride-share operator to return to the Southport unit block around 11.30pm where officers located him with injuries to his face and wrists.

He was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Following investigations, police executed a search warrant at Marsden yesterday, arresting a 21-year-old Marsden man.

He has subsequently been charged with one count each of armed robbery, assault occasioning bodily harm, kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, deprivation of liberty, sexual assault, extortion and contravene requirement.

He is scheduled to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court today, Friday, March 31.

His arrest follows the arrest of a 20-year-old Darra man on Friday, March 17, and a 23-year-old Paradise Point man on Tuesday, March 21.
