Speeding Drink Driver Intercepted At Townsville

Police have charged a man after he was allegedly travelling at 161km/hr on a motorbike while affected by alcohol in Townsville, Sunday morning.

Police intercepted a motorbike being driven at high speed on Townsville Ring Road, Bohle Plains, shortly before 1am.

The 36-year-old Jensen man was allegedly travelling at 161km/hr in a 100km/hr zone prior to being intercepted.

It will be further alleged that the man was drink driving having returned a breath analysis reading of .072.

The man was fined $1,919 and received eight demerit points. He was subsequently issued a Notice to Appear at Townsville Magistrates Court on 12 September.

Highway Patrol Townsville Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Robert Nalder said it is crucial drivers take responsibility when behind the wheel.

"Road safety is a shared responsibility whether you're a driver, passenger, rider, or pedestrian. There is no excuse for dangerous driving," said Senior Sergeant Nalder.

"I urge everyone to familiarise themselves with the Fatal Five – speeding, distraction, drink and drug driving, driving tired and not using seatbelts – and do everything in your power to avoid these proven causes of serious traffic crashes.

"Road safety is everyone's responsibility."

The Queensland Police Service is committed to reducing the number of lives lost on our roads.

Data shows that serious crashes can be significantly reduced when drivers recognise and avoid the 'Fatal Five' behaviours: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.
