Sport and Recreational Aviation Bodies' Transition Concludes

The transition is a step-change for sport and recreational bodies moving to the new regulatory scheme, which maintains their flexibility to operate under rules which are suited to their activities.

Five SABs were successfully granted a Part 149 Certificate prior to the transition deadline of 2 December 2023. They are:

  • Australian Parachute Federation (APF)
  • Australian Sport Rotorcraft Association (ASRA)
  • Gliding Federation of Australia (GFA)
  • Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus)
  • Sports Aviation Federation of Australia (SAFA).

CASA has worked closely with the transitioning SABs, ensuring a smooth transition to the new rules. We would like to thank the organisations - APF, ASRA, GFA, RAAus and SAFA - and their devoted staff and volunteers for their dedication and commitment to meeting the transition timeframe and moving to the new regulatory scheme.

The transition is an important milestone in the transition to Part 149 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations. Part 149 has introduced an authorisation scheme for self-administering organisations, commonly referred to as SABs, which currently administer a range of aviation administration functions that historically occurred under exemptions to the existing aviation legislation.
