Spotlight on physical wellbeing

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training

The Tasmanian Government recognises that physical wellbeing is a key aspect of a student's overall wellbeing and is essential for them to be safe, healthy and positive learners.

The Physical Wellbeing and the Environment Action Plan, released today, highlights the important elements that contribute to a student's physical wellbeing and addresses them in key actions.

This includes actions which increase physical activity, promote information about nutrition and positive engagement with the environment through Field Study Centres.

When developing the Action Plan, we heard that students recognise the connection between physical and mental wellbeing, and often manage their own wellbeing through physical activity.

COVID-19 has highlighted the strong connection between wellbeing and learning, and the important role schools play in supporting the wellbeing of children, young people and families.

Evidence shows that students who have greater health and wellbeing are more likely to have better educational outcomes and positive wellbeing throughout their lives.

We know that maintaining physical wellbeing helps children and young people stay healthy, have more energy, feel confident, manage stress and sleep well.
