  • Expansion will increase capacity for complex procedures across multiple specialties including general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, ENT and gynaecology

Construction is underway on a $16.4m project to significantly expand surgical capability at St George Private Hospital in Sydney's southern region.

The expansion will see the addition of two fully equipped operating theatres, bringing the total number of theatres to 18, as well as two theatre spaces ready for future fitting. This will significantly increase the hospital's capacity to perform a wider range of complex procedures.

The development also includes the relocation of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to level 2, creating essential space for these new theatres. These upgraded facilities are expected to be operational in early 2027.

This expansion is designed to benefit patients requiring care in a variety of specialties, including general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgery, and gynaecology.

The increased theatre capacity means more patients will have access to timely procedures, leading to a better overall patient experience.

The development also strengthens the growth opportunity for St George Private Hospital by providing additional capacity to retain existing surgeons and attract new surgeons to the region.

St George Private Hospital CEO, David Crowe, highlighted the patient-centric nature of this investment.

"Our primary focus is always on delivering the best possible care for our patients. This expansion is a direct response to the growing demand for our surgical services and reflects our dedication to ensuring that our community has access to safe, reliable, and high-quality health care when they need it most," Mr Crowe said.

The expansion is a practical innovation aimed at improving care delivery. Patients will be able to undergo elective surgeries even sooner while surgeons will be able to perform a greater number of procedures at a single, trusted location.

"We understand that for our patients, consistent outcomes and reliability are paramount. This investment is about strengthening our hospital for the long term, ensuring we can continue to offer cutting-edge treatments and compassionate care. It's about making deliberate, informed decisions based on evidence that directly impact people's lives positively," Mr Crowe said.

This strategic development reinforces Ramsay Health Care's commitment to delivering trusted, reliable, and high-quality health care services that are accessible within local Australian communities.
