Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following an alleged storage cage theft in St Kilda East yesterday.
It is alleged two men were breaking into storage cages and looking into vehicles on Hotham Street just before 8am.
They allegedly stole a BMX bicycle and a tool kit from the premises.
Police responded and observed an allegedly stolen blue Volkswagen drive into Carlisle Avenue in Balaclava, where it came to the end of a dead-end street.
The car mounted the curb, then rammed the police vehicle as it fled.
There were no physical injuries.
The Volkswagen, which was allegedly stolen in Mambourin on 15 August, was found dumped on Vale Street in St Kilda a short time later.
A 33-year-old man was arrested nearby.
He has been charged with burglary, theft of motor vehicle, theft from motor vehicle and possess drug of dependence.
The Dandenong man has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 3 March, 2027.
The other male offender remains outstanding at this stage and the investigation is ongoing.
