Staff Assault at Springhill Institution

On April 26, 2026, a number of staff members were assaulted by an inmate at Springhill Institution, a medium-security federal institution. The injured staff members were evaluated and treated at an outside hospital.

The assailant has been identified, and appropriate actions will be taken.

The Correctional Service Canada (CSC) acknowledges the serious and inherent risks faced daily by our correctional staff. We extend our full support to the staff members injured while carrying out the challenging work of maintaining safety and security within our institutions. CSC stands firmly with its employees, recognizing their professionalism and courage in the service of public safety. Their safety and security, as well as the safety of our institutions and the public, remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, CSC will review the circumstances that led to it and take additional measures as necessary. As the Springhill detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the institution are currently investigating the incident, we are unable to comment further at this time.
