Staffing guarantee essential for Mersey services

Tasmanian Labor

It is essential the government urgently provide a guarantee there will be enough staff to provide services at the Mersey Hospital and explain what services are at risk of cancellation.

Shadow Health Minister Anita Dow said the government needed to be honest about the impacts the COVID outbreak will have on patients, staff and the wider community.

“Can the government rule out changes to operating hours at the Accident and Emergency Department?” Ms Dow said.

“Will the NWRH and LGH cope with additional demand from the Mersey as patients are transferred or not admitted to the medical ward?

“What support is being provided to affected staff at this stressful time, particularly those who were deeply impacted by the NW outbreak almost two years ago?

“And when will the COVID care management facility finally be up and running?

“It is vital the government clearly outlines its plan for the Mersey Community hospital to allay concerns and fears as recommended in the review of the North West Outbreak.

“The Premier said the government had a plan for our health system and had recruited enough staff, it is now clear they haven’t.

“It is also disappointing that at a time when the Health Minister’s full attention must be on our health system and COVID he has been forced to also manage the Education portfolio in Sarah Courtney’s absence.

“Our health workers have done an incredible job throughout this pandemic and I’d like to once again place on the record my thanks and support for them.

“The government need to be upfront and honest with Tasmanians. These questions are serious and it is crucial people know how this COVID outbreak at the Mersey Community Hospital will impact them and their community.”
