The State Government is seeking community feedback on its Activity Centres Program, which proposes increased building heights and densities around 60 train stations and tram stops across Melbourne.
The City of Stonnington is preparing a submission outlining an alternative approach consistent with our Housing Strategy and Neighbourhood Activity Centre Strategy. This approach supports significant population growth close to transport, shops and services, while protecting the unique heritage, character and liveability that define Stonnington's neighbourhoods. We have demonstrated through this work that Stonnington can accommodate an additional 67,000 dwellings, exceeding the target set by the State Government of 50,000 dwellings in Stonnington by 2051.
Community members can view the plans and complete the State Government's survey here by 19 October 2025.
Six centres have been identified within Tranche 1 (the first of two cohorts) in Stonnington, including:
Tooronga Station
Gardiner Station
Glen Iris Station
Darling Station
East Malvern Station
Holmesglen Station.
Properties in Stonnington may also be affected by the proposed catchment areas for the Murrumbeena and Carnegie activity centres.
Under the draft proposal, the State Government is introducing new planning controls to increase building heights within and around each identified centre. The plans outline a 'core' area around each station with proposed building heights ranging from 6 to 12 storeys, surrounded by a 'catchment' area of approximately 1 kilometre where building heights of 3 to 6 storeys are proposed.
Maps showing the proposed building heights for each centre are available on the State Government's engage web page.
