State Government responds to Overabundant and Pest Species Report

The State Government has accepted or partially accepted 12 of the 13 recommendations in its response to the Natural Resources Committee's Inquiry into Overabundant and Pest Species Report.

The report highlights the complexity of addressing the impacts caused by wildlife, and the importance of coordinated action between governments, community, landholders and researchers.

The State Government will also consider creating the role of a Chief Ecologist who would be able to assist educate and inform the community on a broad range of issues including the management of overabundant and pest species.

The Chief Ecologist would be recognised by the community as an independent expert, with a scientific background and a comprehensive understanding of the South Australian landscape.

Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said the Natural Resources Committee's Inquiry into Overabundant and Pest Species Report will help guide the continuous humane management of South Australia's wildlife.

"I thank the Committee members for their significant efforts to consider the challenges associated with the management of overabundant and pest species, and the associated recommendations for improvements to the way government departments address them," said Minister Speirs.

"The majority of the 13 recommendations made in the report do align with current government approaches to thoughtfully deliver the humane management of South Australia's wildlife.

"The State Government is already doing a significant amount of work when it comes to overabundant species including kangaroos, koalas and corellas and we will use the report and work of the committee to help identify areas for improvement.

"It's important that landholders, communities and governments work together to manage wildlife in a way that that understands risk, impact and is uses the most current research.

"We will also consider the appointment of a Chief Ecologist, who could play a role in educating and informing the community on the management of overabundant and pest species."
