New Mexico is investing $3 million in The University of New Mexico's Quantum New Mexico Institute (QNM-I) to strengthen the state's quantum workforce and accelerate research and commercialization.
Economic Development New Mexico and QNM-I recently signed an Intergovernmental Agreement that aims to build on the institute's research excellence, attract top talent and grow New Mexico's position as a national leader in quantum innovation.
The investment will support three key priorities:
- Research capacity: Increase support for university-based quantum research to attract world-class faculty, researchers and students.
- Workforce development: Expand quantum education and outreach programs for educators, high school students and university students to build New Mexico's future quantum workforce.
- Commercialization: Help move quantum discoveries from the lab to the marketplace through an entrepreneur-in-residence program, university-lab-industry partnerships, intellectual property support, industry workshops, bootcamps and accelerator programs.
The agreement is part of New Mexico's broader strategy to invest more than $450 million in building a world-leading quantum ecosystem spanning research, workforce development, infrastructure and commercialization.

According to Quantum Insider, the global quantum technology industry is projected to exceed $4 billion by 2028. These investments are designed to ensure New Mexico captures the economic opportunities created by the rapidly growing quantum industry while strengthening the state's position as a global hub for quantum innovation.
