Following the announcement yesterday that 130 countries co-signed a new two-pillar plan on international tax reform, including Canada, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, today issued the following statement:
"Yesterday's statement by 130 countries is a tremendous achievement. It is the next step in the global effort to end the race to the bottom in corporate taxation and to ensure that multinational corporations pay their fair share of taxes wherever they do business and regardless of where their headquarters are located. It builds on important progress at last month's G7 meetings.
"This international agreement is good for Canadian workers and Canadian businesses, and it will ensure a fair and level playing field for them in the global economy. Our government will continue to be focused on Canada's national economic interests in negotiations with our international partners, including at next week's meeting of G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors."
