Statement From Attorney-General 28 August

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity The Honourable Deb Frecklington

I have today instructed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to lodge an appeal against a sentence handed down in the Roma District Court.

On 30 July 2025, Floyd Norman Daniel was convicted of multiple offences, including assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence) and committing a malicious act with intent.

During the course of the offending, a woman was repeatedly punched and one of the police officers who responded was stabbed and suffered a collapsed lung.

I consider the sentence handed down to be manifestly inadequate.

My thoughts are with the victims and I thank the police for the difficult job they do every day - their families rightly expect them to come home safely.

A Notice of Appeal will now be lodged with the Court of Appeal registry on my behalf by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
