I have appointed a municipal monitor to Hobsons Bay City Council to support good governance processes and prac-tices at the council.
I am pleased to announce that Mr John Tanner AM will begin as municipal monitor to Hobsons Bay City Council from 2 June 2025 until 31 December 2025. Mr Tanner will provide me with a report at the end of his term.
Mr Tanner is an expert in local government, leadership, and governance and has valuable skills, experience, and qualifications which he will bring to the council. He recently chaired the panel of Administrators appointed to the Moira Shire Council.
I have directed Mr Tanner, under the terms of reference for municipal monitors, to advise, assist, and support the council to improve its governance processes and practices.
Mr Tanner will work to ensure good governance is restored so that council services are delivered effectively, the health and wellbeing of council staff is prioritised, and the community is better involved and represented.
The Victorian Government has introduced several reforms in the Local Government Act 2020 to strengthen govern-ance and integrity standards across Victoria's 79 councils.
These reforms will deliver mandatory training for elected representatives, a uniform councillor code of conduct, and strengthened powers for me to address councillor conduct.
