Statement of support for Papua New Guinea

As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold globally, Burnet Institute reaffirms its support for, commitment to, and solidarity with the people of Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Australia's nearest neighbour, PNG, is experiencing its first cases of COVID-19, across several provinces.

Burnet Institute Director and CEO, Professor Brendan Crabb AC said: "We stand united with the people of PNG, a country we have a long and active association with, in working together with our local partners to achieve better health for Papua New Guineans, especially through helping strengthen health systems."

"Burnet is currently actively engaged and working with our partners to identify the most useful way we can support PNG in their COVID-19 response."

The Australian government has recently provided a range of support initiatives to PNG, including an additional AUD$20.5 million for more personal protective equipment and increased testing capacity for COVID-19.
