Statement on Independent Review of ACCUs

We welcome today's announcement by Minister Bowen.

Carbon credits will be critical in achieving Australia's enhanced climate targets. Confidence and integrity are vital to the success of Australia's carbon credit system.

This review will give farmers and all Australians the confidence that our emissions reduction system is working, as we work towards our commitments under the Paris Agreement.

The Minister must ensure the Independent Panel has expertise in land sector abatement and multiple use landscapes, to guarantee a thorough understanding of agriculture's intersection with the Emissions Reduction Fund.

We will seek to work closely with the Independent Panel to ensure that any issues or concerns identified can be resolved in a way that doesn't penalise or negatively impact farmers. This will include providing a comprehensive submission on behalf of industry.

We welcome the Minister's inclusion of community impacts, and ways to maximise non-carbon benefits as part of this review. The NFF is continuing to advocate for broader recognition of the environmental stewardship role farmers perform as custodians of 54% of Australia's landmass.
