Station Street Stormwater Upgrade Recommences

Station Street flooding

Byron Shire Council will commence the next stages of an upgrade to the stormwater system on Station Street in Mullumbimby this month, following installation of stormwater crossings at the corner of Station Street and Fern Street earlier this year.

Council's Director Infrastructure Services, Phil Holloway, said that although there have been delays to completing the project, once complete it will address flooding in this part of Mullumbimby.

"We were hoping to have the project complete in July this year, however we had significant delays to the first stage of the project at the corner of Station Street and Fern Street. It's been a very wet year and ex-tropical cyclone Alfred also caused a pause to work," Mr Holloway said.

"We are now looking forward to completing the project which will see the current drainage system replaced with a new, higher-capacity stormwater system that will significantly reduce flooding along Station Street and Fern Street," he added.

During the next stage of work there will be changed traffic conditions and temporary road closures in place on Orchid Place, Fern Street, McGoughans Lane and Station Street until mid-November (weather permitting).

Planned work schedule and impacts (subject to weather)

  • Orchid Place - shoulder closure from mid-August for one month.
  • Orchid Place / Fern Street intersection – partial lane closure from mid-September for three days.
  • McGoughans Lane / Fern Street intersection – partial road closure from late-September for three days.
  • Fern Street – partial road closure from late-September for two weeks.
  • Station Street – south of property number 88 – partial road closure from early-October for three days.
  • Station Street – north of property number 88 – partial road closure from mid-October for two weeks.
  • Station Street – near Council building – partial lane closure (northbound) from late-October for two weeks.
  • Station Street – near pedestrian crossing – partial lane closure (southbound) from early-November for three days.

Traffic control and temporary signage will remain in place for the duration of works and the planned work schedule will be kept up to date on Council's website. Council encourages motorists and pedestrians to follow the temporary signage to ensure public safety.

"We want to thank everyone for their continued patience and appreciate there has been a lot of significant work happening in Mullumbimby this year," Mr Holloway said.

This project is funded by the Australian Government through its Roads to Recovery program, the NSW Government and Council.

Future improvements to Station Street, including footpath, kerb and gutter, and pavement works, are currently unfunded. Council is actively seeking additional funding for these works.
