If you're heading to the beach or pool this Australia Day weekend, don't forget to make sure you swim safe.
Wollongong City Council's Lifeguards are reminding everyone to practice water safety when cooling off. This is especially important as we anticipate an increase in visitors enjoying our beaches and pools over the weekend.
Council's Beach Services Operations Manager Paul Dreghorn encourages all beach goers to look for Lifeguards and Lifesavers before jumping in.
"It doesn't matter if you're a strong swimmer or a beginner, the same rules apply. Always swim between the flags and follow the advice of Lifeguards and Lifesavers. If you don't see a flag, don't swim. It's that simple," he said.
Council Lifeguards patrol 17 of Wollongong's beautiful beaches from Stanwell Park to Windang, six days a week. Volunteer lifesavers from Surf Life Saving Illawarra patrol the beaches on Sundays and public holidays.
"Alcohol and swimming are a dangerous combination. If you plan on having a drink, don't swim," Mr. Dreghorn said.
"Most of all, we hope that you have a happy and safe weekend and if you're not sure about anything come and have a chat with a Lifeguard or Lifesaver before you go swimming."
