The Kitchen Garden Foundation is pleased to share the news of Stephanie Alexander's journey north to Mt Molloy State School on Friday 25 November after they won the Kitchen Garden 20th anniversary video competition.
The video competition asked entrants to convey the impact of the Program within their school and wider community. Over 20 schools submitted videos but only one could win a visit from Stephanie Alexander.
The 90 second video Mt Molloy State School submitted highlighted students working hard in the garden, harvesting veggies to be made into fresh, seasonal, delicious food. It showcases how the Program has been incorporated into other core subjects. Students learn maths and science through measuring plant growth and weighing their harvest, while language and communication skills are nurtured by descriptive prompts aimed at expanding their flavour vocabulary. The school's onsite café provides hospitality experience, while students learn marketing skills selling jam and preserves at a local market and financial literacy running a DIY pizza stall.
The Principal of Mt Molloy State School, Zarah-Rae Budgen, is eagerly anticipating the event. 'Our entire school community is looking forward to Stephanie's visit very much,' she says.
'We were over the moon when we heard that we had won the prize and our team has been on a high ever since. It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all that our school has achieved through this program and gain her expert advice in planning for future success.
'It also ties in perfectly with our 10th year anniversary celebration. We can't wait to celebrate this amazing achievement with Stephanie and our school community.'
As she prepares to visit the school, Stephanie Alexander AO said of the video:
