The tip at Stotts Creek is getting a major overhaul to make it easier and safer for Tweed residents to drop off their waste.
Work has already started on the upgrade to the transfer station at Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre which will remain open throughout construction.
The project is a key part in the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre Master Plan. The upgraded facility will provide a safer, more efficient and modern service for the community and staff and is expected to be finished in mid-2026.
Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry said the project will transform how the Tweed community disposes of and recycles waste.
"This is an exciting milestone," Cr Cherry said.
"The upgraded transfer station will make it easier for everyone to drop off their waste and recycling, with more space, better traffic flow and covered areas that keep recycling dry and in good condition."
Stage 1 of the works is now underway, with the green waste drop-off area relocated to the rear of the site. Signage and staff are on hand to guide customers.
Stage 2 will begin in early November, when the existing transfer station is demolished and construction of the new facility begins. Temporary drop-off areas will be introduced during this stage, with regular updates provided to help customers adjust.
Key benefits of the upgraded facility include:
- more space to drop off waste and recycling
- improved traffic flow and less congestion
- covered drop-off areas to improve safety and keep recycling dry
- fewer vehicles at the tipping bays
- more opportunities to reuse and recover good-quality items through the JUNKtion Tip Shop.
To support the community while works are underway, Council is reminding residents of its on-call kerbside collection service for bulky goods.
Households with a domestic red-lid wheelie bin service are entitled to 2 collections per financial year (up to 2 cubic metres each) and must book in advance. Both collections can be booked together if needed. If you live in a unit block or your residence is part of a community, precinct, or neighbourhood scheme, you need to organise collections through your strata manager, body corporate, or equivalent.
Whenever possible, the collection team will recover salvageable and reusable items when they are dropped at the transfer station. In addition, the site accepts free disposal of items like batteries, household chemicals and gas bottles. Residents are also encouraged to donate quality items to op shops or recycling centres where they can, and to separate whitegoods and reusable items when placing them out for collection.
