Stratford came alive in spectacular fashion on Saturday 6 July, with the inaugural Live & Local: Stratford Sounds event. Drawing thousands to the leafy suburb for a day-long celebration of local music, community spirit, and unforgettable vibes.
From 9.30am until late into the evening, nine diverse venues across Stratford transformed into lively music hubs, each showcasing the exceptional depth and talent of Far North Queensland's live music scene. Cafés, pubs, clubs, and even a barbershop were bursting at the seams as locals and visitors alike followed the music trail weaving through the sleepy streets.
Headlining the excitement was The Magazine, Stratford's newest creative venue operated by Nu Nu Catering, which made a bold debut with a full day of musical programming and buzzing crowds. Over at Stratford Bowls Club, lawn bowls made way for laid-back grooves, while Eagle Tamer Barbershop offered one of the most intimate and unique stages of the day — music amidst the clippers and combs.
The Barron River Hotel, Narrow Tracks Distilling, The Fox Small Bar and Palooka each delivered packed performances, with audiences spilling onto footpaths and beer gardens. Locals strolled between venues, programs in hand, discovering emerging singer-songwriters, seasoned bands, and fresh sounds at every stop. Community pride was on full display as residents opened their arms — and their ears — to the power of live music.
Cairns Regional Council Division 6 Councillor, Kristy Vallely, praised the event for its community-focused approach. "Live & Local: Stratford Sounds proved what we've always known - that there's enormous appetite for grassroots music experiences, and that our local talent shines brightest on their home stage," she said. "It was pure magic seeing our community come together, dancing between venues, supporting local venues and musicians, and turning our quiet little suburb into a live music playground. This is what community looks and sounds like."
With some venues reporting record trading days and artists playing to standing-room-only crowds, Live & Local: Stratford Sounds has already cemented itself as a standout on the local cultural calendar.
The event was presented by Cairns Regional Council in partnership with the Live Music Office, APRA AMCOS and the Australian Government through Creative Australia, and delivered as part of the Cairns Festival program.
