Street art harnesses young people's creativity

Young people and local artists in Brimbank have partnered together to create a new mural, designed to inspire community pride in Sunshine.

The vibrant street art is located on a private wall in Watt Street which is an access route to the Sunshine Railway Station.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou said the vibrant mural is designed to improve amenity around the station, reduce incidences of tagging and create a sense of place.

'Public art like this can help to prevent graffiti and build local pride of place,' Cr Papafotiou said.

'We are proud of the young people and local artists involved, who have worked creatively and collaboratively to create this piece of public art for our community to enjoy for years to come.'

'This mural represents our diverse and harmonious community and will improve the amenity of the local area for visitors to Sunshine Town Centre, rail commuters, and local property owners alike.'

Local artists Tadros Ibrahim and Sebastian Fransz hosted workshops with young people experiencing disadvantage, who were brought together by Brimbank Youth Services, to design and produce key components of the mural.

By taking up the entire wall, and including the names of the artists and young people involved, the mural invites a perception of safety and helps foster a sense of belonging.

The project was delivered by Brimbank City Council, and funded by a $17,000 Graffiti Prevention Grant from the Victorian Government's Community Crime Prevention Program.

The mural aligns with Brimbank's Community Safety Strategy, Council Plan and Sunshine Rising Action Plan, and contributes to the provision of clean and safe public areas and spaces, community connection and pride, place activation and quality urban environments.

Council appreciates the support of Victoria Police, the private owner of the wall and the Brimbank Arts Advisory Committee.
