Street bin enclosures get a fresh new look - East Gippsland

Residents of Metung and Benambra will start to see fresh new look bin surrounds being installed by East Gippsland Shire Council from mid-June.

Mayor Cr Natalie O'Connell said existing street bin enclosures vary across East Gippsland; they are different in look, ability to be maintained, ease of collection and most of them are coming to their end-of-life.

"To ensure our bins have a fresh contemporary look and are easy to collect and maintain, specially designed stainless-steel street bin enclosures are starting to be rolled out to urban town centres across East Gippsland and will continue over the next few years," Cr O'Connell said.

The project has commenced with new bins installed at the front of the newly refurbished Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreational Centre. Benambra and Metung are scheduled to receive these smart looking enclosures shortly. The same bins will be introduced in Johnsonville, Swan Reach and Nicholson as part of current street upgrades and beautification works in the Twin Rivers towns.

"The new bin enclosures will accommodate 240-litre waste and recycling bins and will replace the 120L bins currently in place. This will assist the bins to cope with additional waste over the summer months and reduce the need to include unsightly green residential bins in our tourist areas over peak times," Cr O'Connell said.

"The bins will also enable the introduction of recycling services into town centres where practical and financially viable."

Prior to replacing the enclosures, a complete assessment of each town will be undertaken. Where recent streetscapes have introduced new bins, these will not be replaced until they have reached the end of their current life.

The bins are manufactured locally, which will assist with their prompt supply and replacement if damaged.
