Strengthened Teacher Registration (Northern Territory) Act Passes Parliament

A strengthened TeacherRegistration (Northern Territory) Act has passed through Parliamenttoday, the first update to the legislation in nearly a decade.

The TeacherRegistration (Northern Territory) Legislation Amendment Bill 2019 contemporisesthe legislation for the registration of teachers and regulation of the teachingprofession.

Among the keyamendments are increased powers for the Teacher Registration Board fordisciplinary proceedings and increased openness, transparency, and availabilityof information regarding the Boards operations and decision making.

The amendments,informed by a comprehensive review of the legislation, take into consideration recommendationsof the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse thatrelate to teacher registration, and the national review of teacher registrationundertaken by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership lastyear.

As stated by Minister for Education, Selena Uibo.

These amendments tothe Teacher Registration (Northern Territory) Act strengthen and contemporisethe legislation to ensure the safety and wellbeing of school children continuesto be paramount.

These proposedamendments will also enable the Teacher Registration Board to publishinformation about the outcome of an inquiry through de-identified casesummaries.
