Strong Solar Battery Uptake In First Month

More Australians are installing solar batteries - with early figures showing strong interest after 1 month of eligibility under the Clean Energy Regulator's (CER) Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.

As of 1 July 2025, households and businesses can get around 30% off the total cost of a solar battery when installing with a new or existing rooftop solar system.

Throughout the month of July 2025, 19,592 solar batteries were installed, providing a total nominal capacity of 344.1 MWh. The average nominal battery size installed has been 18.2 kWh.

These figures include applications that have claimed or had small-scale technology certificates approved. It does not include installations that haven't claimed yet.

CER Executive General Manager of the Scheme Operations Division, Carl Binning, says it's promising to see so many Australians interested in installing a solar battery.

'Solar batteries allow all Australians to play a vital role in accelerating the renewable energy uptake in Australia,' Mr Binning said.

'An increase in solar batteries across Australia benefits the householder and reduces supply and demand across the whole electricity grid, meaning lower electricity bills for everyone.

'It's essential that safety is at the forefront - our inspection program is now underway on new solar batteries that have claimed the discount under the scheme.

'We'll publish inspection findings later this month once enough inspections have been completed to identify trends, and draft findings have been confirmed through due processes.

'Inspection findings will be shared with state and territory electrical and safety regulators who are responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations within their jurisdictions.

'We also share the findings with industry bodies like Solar Accreditation Australia to inform their compliance program and Continuing Professional Development program.'

From mid-August 2025, monthly postcode-level battery installation data will be published on our small-scale installation postcode data page.

Data on solar batteries installed before 1 July 2025 has been provided to the CER on a voluntary basis and is published on our small-scale installation postcode data page. More accurate data on solar battery installations before 1 July 2025 can be found on the Australian Energy Market Operator's Distributed Energy Resource Register.

The CER expects demand to be high during the roll-out of this new program. Processing times for small-scale technology certificates will take longer than usual. Please be patient as the program ramps up.
