The Morrison Government will strengthen deployed networks against cyber threats through its $1.4 billion investment in Defence cyber capabilities over 20 years.
Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC today announced the details of Joint Project 9131 Cyberspace Operations.
"Cyber threats to Defence networks and missions systems have the potential to undermine the Australian Defence Force's ability to operate," Minister Reynolds said.
"This project ensures Defence can actively defend its deployed networks and platforms against the rapidly evolving cyber threats, and is enabled to operate effectively in cyberspace.
"This investment builds on the Government commitment that was made in the 2016 Defence White Paper to strengthen Defence's cyber capability."
As part of an initial investment of $575 million, the project will deliver a comprehensive training program to support the growth of the ADF cyber workforce, including virtual cyber training environments and tools.
To maintain an edge over evolving threats, staged investment is also planned to develop the training, tools and infrastructure that is crucial to ensuring the capacity and relevance of Defence's cyber operations capability.
"This Government is also funding the construction of a modern, purpose-built Joint Information Warfare Facility in the ACT which will offer critical ADF training simulation, cyber training and operations," Minister Reynolds said.
"Through the measures outlined in the Force Structure Plan 2020, which was announced by the Prime Minister and I on 1 July, the Morrison Government is reinforcing its significant commitment to grow our sovereign capabilities.
"This project, along with other government initiatives, will offer significant opportunities for the Australian domestic cyber security sector and the local construction industry - delivering on this Government's commitment to grow Australian industry and secure Australian jobs."
As well as developing an Industry Engagement Plan to maximise Australian industry involvement, the project's partnership with the Defence Science and Technology Group is expected to grow Australia's sovereign cyber industry capability by linking industry to the Cyber Threat Response Lab.
The lab will provide direct opportunities for small and medium sized businesses to collaborate with Defence on innovative training and cyber tool solutions.
