The NT Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) received a report of a fire on Emungalan Road in Katherine around 1.30pm.
Upon arrival, crews found a large hay shed engulfed in flames which has suffered extensive damage.
Crews are working to contain and extinguish the fire and will remain onsite this evening.
NTFRS members from Darwin are also being deployed to assist with the response.
Members of the public are advised to avoid the area due to a significant level of smoke, and to turn on headlights and slow down if driving in the vicinity.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
Quotes attributed to NTFRS Northern Command District Officer, Royle Salt:
"NTFRS crews responded quickly and will be working into the evening to extinguish the blaze.
"I want to remind residents to avoid the area, and anticipate significant levels of smoke in the vicinity for some time."
