Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan has officially opened the new Spinifex Hill Studio Project and Gallery Space in South Hedland.
Designed by award-winning architects Officer Woods, the new project and gallery space is the latest addition to the Spinifex Hill Studio complex that was established in 2014.
The delivery of this new facility is in direct response to the growth of the Spinifex Hill artists and increasing interest from locals and visitors wanting to engage with artists and their artworks.
The project and gallery space will enable Spinifex Hill artists to hold exhibitions that enable close encounters with the people and identities of regional places, while making a significant contribution towards creating sustainable, ongoing jobs for artists in the region.
The first exhibition showcased as part of the official opening, 'Where We Go to Paint', opened on July 7, featuring established and emerging artists.
Funding for the new project space was provided by BHP and Lotterywest, with further support by the McGowan Government through a $100,000 Regional Economic Development (RED) Grant.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"The Spinifex Hill Studio Project and Gallery Space will now be a fitting companion for the highly successful East Pilbara Arts Centre in Newman.
"Both centres combine impressive gallery spaces with workshops for artists - creating a living art experience.
"The art of the Pilbara is being increasingly recognised - bringing cultural pride and economic activity to the region."
As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:
"It is wonderful to have a new facility dedicated to art, community, culture and the creativity of the people of the Pilbara.
"Our region produces some of the best art in Australia, if not the world.
"It's vital visitors in our region feel able to go to art centres such as these and see the art displayed and meet members of the artistic community.
"Congratulations to FORM for leading this project and the other project partners and to the Spinifex Hill artists for the magnificent display of artworks we are currently privileged to see in this beautiful space, as part of 'Where We Go to Paint'."
